The date is April 20, 1992. The Orioles were playing host to the Detroit Tigers on a beautiful Monday night.
It’s the third inning, and Tigers catcher Mickey Tettleton steps to the plate with a 2-0 lead over former No. 1 overall pick Ben McDonald. In a 2-1 count, Tettleton smacked a deep fly ball to right field and hit the very first home run onto Charm City’s historic Eutaw Street.
There have been a total of 122 home runs hit onto Eutaw Street throughout the 31 years that Oriole Park at Camden Yards has existed. The most home runs hit by an Oriole player onto Eutaw Street belongs to Chris Davis, who hit 11 in his career. The most home runs hit by a non-Oriole to Eutaw Street belong to Jason Giambi, who has three.
Looking at the 122 total home runs hit onto Eutaw Street, Orioles players have hit 58 of them, with the most recent being Anthony Santander on August 24, 2023. As for the Orioles’ opponents, they have hit 64 home runs onto Eutaw Street, with Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh being the most recent to do so on June 25, 2023.
Earlier, I mentioned that Tigers catcher Mickey Tettleton was the first to hit a home run onto Eutaw Street in 1992. But did you know that the Orioles took three seasons to hit their first Eutaw Street home run? It wasn’t until 1995 when Kevin Bass hit the first Eutaw Street home run in the good old orange and black.
Do you know what the record number of Eutaw Street home runs in a single season is? The answer is 11 in 2013. The players who hit the home runs include Andre Ethier, Roger Bernadina, Hank Conger, Lonnie Chisenhall, Robbie Grossman, Chris Davis (twice), Charlie Blackmon, Adam Dunn, Curtis Granderson and Ryan Flaherty.
So there we have it; a small breakdown of the beloved Eutaw Street and its home runs. Do you have a favorite Eutaw Street home run? Has your favorite player in MLB history hit a Eutaw Street homer?
