The 2023 season for the Baltimore Orioles was an exciting and magical one. Though it ended earlier than expected, GM Mike Elias has already switched his focus to 2024.
On Thursday, the Orioles would claim left-handed outfielder Sam Hilliard from the Atlanta Braves. This is the second waiver claim the Orioles have made this offseason, as left-handed pitcher Tucker Davidson was also claimed last week.
Hilliard, 29, was originally drafted in 2015 by the Colorado Rockies in the 15th round out of Wichita State. He would play four seasons with the Rockies and set most of his career highs in 2021, including games played (81), hits (46), home runs (14), RBIs (34) and runs (32).
Though Hilliard displayed some pop, his defense is what made him a versatile player. Capable of playing all three outfield positions, Hillard is a perfect depth player who’s had multiple years of experience.
This past season, the Braves acquired Hilliard from the Rockies for right-hander Dylan Spain and would play 40 games before a heal contusion ended his season. During his time with the Braves, he would post a .725 OPS with a .389 average of balls in play. Hilliard would also post a 1.000 fielding percentage as the fifth outfielder for Atlanta.
For his career, Hilliard is slashing .215/.294/.424 with 24 doubles, seven triples and 32 home runs. He has driven in 77 runs while scoring 99 and has stolen 19 of 20 bases.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Orioles have designated right-hander Joey Krehbiel for assignment.
Kriehbal, 30, appeared in six games for the Birds this past season and would go 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 0.80 WHIP, striking out five across five innings of work.
