I think it is highly safe to say that the Blue Jays have a hard time pitching to Orioles’ first baseman Ryan Mountcastle. After all, Mountcastle is not only Toronto’s kryptonite, but he turns into the next coming of Barry Bonds whenever he faces them.

While it’s easy to say this after his incredible stat line during the O’s latest four-game series against the Jays, Mountcastle has actually been killing Toronto pitching from the beginning of his career.

Here is a year to year breakdown of Mountcastle against Toronto that will be followed up by a complete career breakdown. These stats are all after the August 3 game against Toronto.

2020

Mountcastle made his major league debut on August 21, 2020, and just one week later, he would have his first at-bats against the Blue Jays.

His first real crushing Blue Jays moment would be on August 30, 2020, when he would not only hit his first big league home run, but he would also hit a second home run and finish the game with three hits and three RBIs.

He would finish the 2020 season against Toronto playing in seven games and slashing .345/.367/.552 with a .918 OPS in 29 at-bats. He would have 10 hits, eight singles, two home runs and four RBIs. He would also walk once and strike out four times.

2021

The 2021 MLB season was the first full season for Mountcastle, as the season prior was mostly cut short due to the pandemic.

Mountcastle would start right back where he left off, as in O’s the second game against Toronto, he would have a four-hit night that consisted of three home runs and four RBIs. Also, in the 18 times the Blue Jays and Orioles played, Mountcastle would go hitless in just two of the games.

In those 18 games, Mountcastle would slash .324/.403/.662 with a 1.064 OPS in 77 total at-bats. He would have 22 hits, two doubles, seven home runs and 12 RBIs. The 22 hits and seven home runs would be the most he had against one single team during that season.

2022

Believe it or not, 2022 is considered Mountcastle’s worst season in his career against Toronto. But it’s still an insane season to look at against one specific team.

Mounty began right where he left off, as in his second game against Toronto, he would have a three-hit game with all three being extra base hits. He started the season series in a spree where he went seven games straight with at least one hit and having multiple hits in five out of the seven.

Mountcastle played in 17 games against the Blue Jays in 2022 and slashed .313/.362/.641 with a 1.003 OPS in 64 at-bats. He had 20 hits, six doubles, five home runs and 17 RBIs. He also only walked four times and struck out 15 times.

2023 (So Far)

This season is by far the best season for Mountcastle against the Blue Jays. He started out slow in the season series, having just one hit in the first matchup, and it was a home run nonetheless.

This latest series against Toronto just proved that he is still the best hitter that Toronto has faced in recent history. Mountcastle went 11-for-13 in the series alone, which is tied for the most hits by an Orioles player in one series.

Mountcastle has currently played in seven games against Toronto and is slashing .480/.531/.760 with a 1.291 OPS in just 25 at-bats. He has 12 hits, four doubles, one home run and nine RBIs. He also has walked four times, struck out four times, stole a base and has two sac flies, and he still has three more games to go.

Career Overview

It’s completely safe to say that Mountcastle is indeed the thorn that the Blue Jays have in their side. He has played in 49 total games against Toronto and has slashed .344/.404/.651 with a 1.054 OPS in 186 at-bats.

He’s collected 64 total hits, 12 doubles, 15 home runs and 42 RBIs. He also has 18 walks, has stolen a base and had two sacrifice flies.

The running joke of Mountcastle owning the Blue Jays might not be a joke when you take a deep dive.
