Individual accolades are always great. They are even greater when it comes as your team is successful at the same time.
It matters more. It shows you had a hand in the success. What’s even better than it all? Sharing the accolades and success with teammates and brothers.
For Adley Rutschman, Austin Hays, Yennier Canó and Félix Bautista, their first time experiencing the All-Star Game and festivities was not only a first for them all but a show of how far the Orioles, and they, have grown.
Adley Rutschman would put on a show the night before. His dad sharing a moment, one Hollywood could dream up, that would grab national attention. It was the culmination of a father and son sharing a National Pastime, a moment as kids we dream of while in the backyard.
Austin Hays became the lone Oriole starter, but it didn’t dull the experience for Rutschman, Canó and Bautista. The one thing the cameras and mic caught was the support of each other through it all. Each player had a different experience, but they shared it together as teammates.
Hays would collect a hit in two at-bats, while Rutschman went hitless in one at-bat. Rutschman would also get the opportunity to catch Canó and Bautista in the game as well.
Canó pitched an inning, allowing a hit and striking out two. Bautista (BS, L 0-1) came two pitchers later and allowed a two-run homer, walked two and struck out one.
Each man got to experience their first action in an All-Star game, and though the AL lost, the one thing that was reminded of to the players: it’s just a fun game.
Whether Rutschman, Hays, Canó, or Bautista take their job as something more, the All-Star game reminds them that at the end of the day, it’s just a game. A game made better when your brothers and teammates can enjoy it with you.
Congratulations to Adley Rutschman, Austin Hays, Yennier Canó and Félix Bautista on this incredible honor.
