We are at the All-Star Break, but that doesn’t mean the Orioles are going to stop making moves on the farm.
It was announced earlier this afternoon that infielders Jackson Holliday and Coby Mayo, along with right-hander Chayce McDermott, were all given new homes, as they all have been promoted to the next tier.
Let’s go over each player’s statistics so far this season and see why they earned their promotions. First, let’s start with the top prospect in all of baseball.
JACKSON HOLLIDAY – SINGLE-A ABERDEEN –> DOUBLE-A BOWIE
The 2022 No. 1 overall pick gets called up to play in Double-A for the Bowie Baysox. Holliday, who coincidentally was called up on the MLB 2023 Draft day, has been killing it in High-A Aberdeen, and he undoubtedly deserves this promotion.
Holliday in Aberdeen played 57 total games and slashed .314/.452/.488 with a .940 OPS in 207 at-bats. He collected 65 hits, 11 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 35 RBIs and also drew 50 walks and stole 17 bases in 24 attempts.
Holliday is just 19 years old and is already scaling the Orioles’ farm system. He’s already climbed the MLB prospect rankings, as he was just awarded the honor of being the top prospect in all of baseball.
Holliday is a huge star in the making and someone that Balitmore should be very excited to see in the majors soon. Don’t be surprised if we see the second-generation star in orange and black as soon as next season.
COBY MAYO – DOUBLE-A BOWIE –> TRIPLE-A NORFOLK
I think we can all agree that it’s about time that Coby Mayo makes his Triple-A debut. Mayo has been with Double-A Bowie since late in the 2022 season and has played 112 games in Bowie. However, Mayo has been a different monster this season at the plate.
Mayo has played 78 games in Bowie this season and has slashed .307/.424/.603 with a 1.027 OPS in 287 at-bats. He tallied 88 hits, 30 doubles, two triples and 17 home runs and collected 44 RBIs, 51 walks and stole four bases in five attempts.
Mayo will go back to becoming teammates with fellow infielder César Prieto and slugger Heston Kjerstad, whom he played with earlier this season in Bowie.
The 21-year-old will also join an infield filled with players who have major league experience that can help motivate him and prepare him for a near future call-up.
CHAYCE MCDERMOTT – DOUBLE-A BOWIE –> TRIPLE-A NORFOLK
It still hurts that the Orioles traded away Trey Mancini, but we still think very highly of Chayce McDermott when he is on the mound.
McDermott first played for Double-A Bowie late in the 2022 season and has pitched 22 total games for the Baysox in his time as an Orioles prospect.
McDermott, this season, has pitched really well on the mound. In 16 games, the right-hander has started 14 of them and carries a 5-6 record with a 3.56 ERA in 68.1 innings pitched. He has given up 42 hits, 27 earned runs, 44 walks and has struck out 88, with a 1.26 WHIP and .175 opponent batting average.
McDermott will join a rotation with the likes of Grayson Rodriguez and former teammate Drew Rom. The 24-year-old is someone who could contribute for the Orioles next season in a bullpen role or in a possible spot start pitcher like a Bruce Zimmermann.
The Orioles farm system gets better and better by the day, and the moves bring in more and more fans. I highly recommend that if you are in the area to go watch these prospects live and see how great they have become in their time in the organization.
