The Baltimore Orioles have the top farm system in baseball. What no one expected was the system to consistently rack up awards and honors across all levels essentially every single week.
That trend continues this week as Coby Mayo and Samuel Basallo have taken home Player of the Week honors in their respective leagues. Let’s go over each of their performances from this past week.
COBY MAYO – INF
This week, Coby Mayo, coming off a 33-game on-base streak, looks ready to start a new one. Mayo hit .462, collecting 12 total hits, three of which were home runs, as he also drove in five.
For the season, Mayo leads the Eastern League in slugging (.609) and OPS (1.041) and is leading the Bowie Baysox in OPS slugging, home runs (14), RBIs (39), runs (42), doubles (26), games played (67), at-bats (243), walks (44) and OBP (.432).
Mayo is currently ranked 80th on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects list and is one of seven total O’s prospects in the top 80.
SAMUEL BASALLO – C
Basallo’s week was just as strong, as he hit .444 for Low-A Delmarva this past week. He picked up eight total hits, two of them home runs, while driving in four.
For the season, Basallo leads all catchers in runs (40), hits (71), doubles (14), RBIs (47) and slugging (.479). The young Dominican catcher is leading the Shorebirds in home runs (8), games played (61) and at-bats (236).
Another catching prospect lighting up the league in the Orioles’ farm system. It’s a matter of time before the 18-year-old is moved up to High-A Aberdeen.
The Orioles have built a farm system that is pumping talent out from top to bottom. As awards and accolades pile up, you can see why they have the top farm system in the league.
