The Baltimore Orioles are at the top once again. Not only possessing the top minor league system, they now possess the top prospect for the third year in a row.
Jackson Holliday was named MLB’s top prospect by MLB Pipeline on Sunday. His ability to control the strike zone while having an even split with walks and strikeouts has earned him the top ranking.
Holliday is a five-tool talent who possesses raw left-handed power and a strong defensive presence in the middle infield. Orioles GM Mike Elias has now had Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday ascend to the No.1 overall prospect spot each of the past three years.
Holliday is currently slashing .325/.463/.531 on the season as he has moved from Single-A ball to High-A ball. He has hit a combined seven home runs with 47 RBIs across 63 of games.
He has 74 total hits while walking and striking out 57 times and has stolen 20 bases. It’s just a matter of time before he is promoted to Double-A Bowie, and he isn’t even 20 years old yet.
The Orioles have six more prospects in the top 100 as well.
- No. 1 – Jackson Holliday INF
- No. 15 – Colton Cowser OF
- No. 34 – Jordan Westburg INF
- No. 40 – Heston Kjerstad OF/1B
- No. 67 – Joey Ortiz INF
- No. 71 – Connor Norby INF
- No. 80 – Coby Mayo INF
All the players in the top 100 have been drafted by Elias. Unfortunately, D.L. Hall, drafted before Elias came aboard, fell out of the top 100. Due to a decrease in velocity and control problems, Hall has been sent to rookie ball to work on regaining his control.
One thing is for sure, the Orioles have a pipeline of talent that should keep them exciting and contending for years to come.
